WASHINGTON He supported Donald Trump. She supported Hillary Clinton. But in the midst of the 2016 election, Brian Sicknick, an officer with the U.S. Capitol Police, and Caroline Behringer, an adviser for a liberal congresswoman, found common ground. They met mornings at an entrance to the Capitol, she headed to her office, he protecting those doing the people s work. They chatted about unwinding in the outdoors and joked about being on opposite sides of the political divide tearing the nation apart. There was a shared humanity, Behringer said, noting, My job was very much dependent on him keeping me safe.
After rioters stormed the Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz suggested at least some might have been members of Antifa posing as supporters of President Donald Trump a claim that since has been debunked.
As he has done since early on in Trump s campaign for office, Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach, stood firmly behind the president even in the wake of Wednesday s events. Rep.
André Carson just ended a Zoom meeting with fellow members of the Congressional Black Caucus when he was informed by a Capitol police officer that there was an imminent security threat to the building on Wednesday.
Thousands of Trump supporters had forced their way into the building during a joint congressional session certifying election results. He immediately texted his colleagues in Congress to make sure they were safe and called his family.
Carson said the attempted coup reminded him of the hatred he experienced during a health care debate in 2010, when he and the late Rep. John Lewis were attacked with racial slurs. After experiencing that, Carson explained, the attempted coup came as no surprise to him.
