The Lancaster County Commissioners are hoping an undeveloped plot of land along the Conestoga River in Lancaster Township will be the location of a new county prison.
The land, currently owned by Clyde and Shirley Kreider, is a 75-acre farm surrounded on three sides by a horseshoe bend in the Conestoga, west of Lancaster County Central Park and east of Route 222.
The county has agreed to pay the Kreider family $3 million for the property, but the proposed deal allows the county to back out if the land cannot be zoned for use as a prison, and completion of a new facility could be several years away.
