It may have started off as a joke, but the $8,400 that Bret Levy and James Medina raised for Lancaster County Food Hub off of a workplace bet will have positive implications for needy families in the area.
Now the two Lancaster General Hospital emergency room doctors are trying to reach $10,000 on their Facebook fundraiser.
Levy and Medina were stunned when they raised nearly four times their initial goal of $350 in just six hours â all for a cause that began as a gag to have Levy cut his beard into a distinctive âmonkey tailâ design if they surpassed their fundraising target.
The great outdoors widens horizons as we continue to hunker down. Going outside doesnât have to stop when the temperatures drop. Thereâs beauty in taking a walk in the winter. Wilma Wagler loves walking through the covered bridges crossing the Conestoga River around her home near Leola, no matter the weather.
âIt is so invigorating,â she says. âI love the scenery and getting outside. It keeps me emotionally and physically well.â
Taking a hike in the winter means fewer crowds. With the leaves off the trees and little understory, the entire landscape looks different.
From the gear you need to where to go, experts throughout Lancaster County show you how to make the most of your winter walks.

They were selected by our reporters and editors based on our reporting and in consultation with knowledgeable people in their fields. We know there are many who, like them, do their best with no expectation of public recognition, but we believe it is important to highlight the bright lights in our community. We hope you will join us in congratulating all of our honorees.
