The vaccine is still very safe : Lancaster County educators not worried about J&J vaccine

Lancaster County educators were thrilled to get vaccinated once Pennsylvania prioritized the first Johnson & Johnson vaccine shipments for school personnel. Even with the news that the Johnson & Johnson shot may be linked to rare blood clots, prompting state officials to pause administering doses in accordance with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration, that hasn’t changed. “In the millions of doses, there have only been a handful of adverse reactions, so the vaccine is still very safe,” Conestoga Valley High School biology teacher and Conestoga Valley Education Association President Tara Flick said.

A turning point : More than half of eligible Lancaster, Lebanon county educators vaccinated through state initiative

About 7,400 educators from Lancaster and Lebanon counties rolled up their sleeves for the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine as part of Pennsylvania’s initiative to vaccinate the state’s roughly 200,000 school employees against COVID-19. That’s according to the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13, one of 29 intermediate units that, with help from the Pennsylvania National Guard and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, served as a host site beginning in mid-March as teachers, support staff, bus drivers and more flocked to get their vaccine. Statewide, more than 112,000 educators were vaccinated in about three weeks. “While the timing was short, IU staff responded as they always do, with a willingness and heart to serve our communities,” IU13 executive director Brian Barnhart said Monday. “Public and private school patients were both understanding and kind as the process was quite fluid and subject to quick change.”

It s hope : Lancaster County educators start getting vaccinated a year after statewide shutdown

On Thursday, exactly a year later, Murphy received his COVID-19 vaccination. It s funny looking back on how little we knew, Murphy, a second-grade teacher at Nitrauer Elementary School, said Thursday after getting his one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine at the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 headquarters in Lancaster. It kicked off the first round of a massive effort to administer vaccines to teachers and staff from Lancaster County public and private schools. The IU13, one of 29 intermediate units across the state, is serving as a host site in collaboration with the Pennsylvania National Guard. IU13 expects to receive about 5,400 vaccine doses in the first round of inoculations, which prioritizes teachers and staff — bus drivers, cafeteria staff, janitors and others — serving students in prekindergarten through sixth grade and at-risk student populations. The second round, for the rest of teachers and staff, is expected to take place at the end of March or early
