Twelve new COVID-19 cases, including one at Wallaceburg’s Fairfield Park long-term care home, were reported Tuesday by the Chatham-Kent public health unit.
Four schools in Chatham-Kent also reported one case apiece. They resumed in-person classes this week after being shut for seven weeks.

The Fairfield Park outbreak was up to 93 total cases, but the number of active cases fell to 30 active resident cases and 30 active staff cases.
“We have started receiving the results from our ongoing weekly surveillance testing efforts that took place yesterday,” administrator Tracey Maxim said in a statement. “All results have come back negative, with the exception of one staff member who is now self-isolating at home. This is positive news for us.”

Chatham-Kent saw a dip in the number of new COVID-19 cases reported Friday just as another vaccine shipment arrived that will be administered to long-term care residents.
There were seven new cases of the virus, a sharp drop from the 20 reported on Thursday by Chatham-Kent public health.

With the 13 recoveries reported Friday, the number of active cases in the region fell to 136 from the record high of 142 reached for a second timeon Thursday.
The cumulative total of cases sits at 1,264, with 1,122 resolved.

The COVID-19 outbreak at Fairfield Park long-term care home in Wallaceburg grew to 71 cases Wednesday after 12 new cases were reported.
The 103-bed facility is the only long-term care home in Chatham-Kent where residents have gotten COVID-19.

When Fairfield Park still had 59 cases Tuesday, administrator Tracey Maxim said 32 residents, 26 staff members and one essential caregiver had tested positive.
Another breakdown of cases isn’t expected from the home until Friday at the earliest.
One resident’s case has been resolved and he is back in his room. Three staff members are also out of isolation and have returned to work.

A sixth Chatham-Kent resident has died of COVID-19.
The Chatham-Kent public health unit reported at 12:30 p.m. Friday a man in his 70s died at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance in the previous 24 hours.

He was the third local COVID-19 death in 16 days after Chatham-Kent had three in the previous nine months.
A second outbreak at the health alliance’s Chatham hospital was also declared late Friday afternoon on the medicine unit. Two staff members and one patient on the medicine A and B units tested positive.
