Lack of International Students Hurts School Board s Bottom Line | 99 1 FM CKXS

May 13, 2021   One of the quiet ways school boards bring in money is by allowing international students into their system. But as John Howitt, director of education for the Lambton Kent District School Board says, that’s not possible during a global pandemic. “There was an impact to our overall budget, we ended up with about 30% of our normal or anticipated number for international students.” Last year, the LKDSB hosted between 30 and 40 international students, compared to the usual number of 150. “It not only enhances the educational opportunities for those students coming, we really strongly believe that opportunity for our students to learn with others across the globe gives our students a strong understanding of the world in whole.”

When Will Kids Get Back To School? | 99 1 FM CKXS

May 3, 2021   There is no shortage to the questions being asked surrounding this pandemic but one of the questions asked the most often: will students return to the classroom this year? No one seems to have the answer to that one. Deb Crawford, Director of Education for the St. Clair Catholic District School Board says it’s a numbers game. “We’re understanding there’s some conditions that the provincial table will need to be in place for schools to return in Ontario, and so much of that has to do with the situation around community spread of COVID,” Crawford says. “We’re waiting for advisement from the Ministry (of Education) to let us know what could perhaps happen to us, provincially.”
