Barbadians urged to be prepared - Barbados Today

Barbadians urged to be prepared Article by July 1, 2021 As the island prepares for the passage of Tropical Storm Elsa, Barbadians are being urged to be prepared. Minister of Home Affairs, Information and Public Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams, made the plea, during a press conference and update on Tropical Storm Elsa at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre earlier this afternoon. In light of the recent “freak storm”, Minister Abrahams noted the “fragility” of properties on the island.  “We are expecting sustained storm force winds, sustained winds in excess of the winds that we would have had a week and a half ago, so people need to look around their houses; make themselves as prepared as they can be; pick up all the loose objects that can become missiles; clear the drains.  If you have a well on your property clear the waterways, and just make yourself as prepared as you can be,” he pleaded.

Storm warning

Social Share Barbados shut down early yesterday, as Barbadians rushed to shutter windows, purchase extra groceries and protect their homes from the fifth named cyclone of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season. “This is for real,” a concerned looking Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley warned the country of a visit from an unwelcome guest due to arrive in the early hours of this morning – Tropical Storm Elsa. “The most important things at this stage are the saving of lives and protection of property,” she said during a special press briefing at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre yesterday evening. She and Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams also warned Barbadians to stay off the street between last night and early this morning as winds 45 miles per hour and up were expected.
