Boy dead after vehicle hits dirt bike on Onion Lake Cree Nation

Saskatoon / 650 CKOM Apr 26, 2021 2:47 PM A 13-year-old boy is dead after he was hit by a vehicle Sunday on the Onion Lake Cree Nation. According to the RCMP, the boy was riding a dirt bike when he was hit. Officers from the Onion Lake detachment and paramedics responded to the call and found the boy dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle took off, but was later found at a home in the area. The 28-year-old man is charged with failure to stop after an accident causing death and operating a motor vehicle while impaired. He’s to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Tuesday.

Man accused of firing gun at an Onion Lake home seeks bail

Judge Kim Young reserved the court’s decision and adjourned the matter until May 19. Lane Ryder Pahtayken, 23, of Onion Lake, is also charged in the incident. According to Onion Lake RCMP, shots were fired at a home at about 9:30 a.m. on April 10. The people inside the home escaped to a nearby residence and weren’t harmed. Alberta RCMP arrested Pahtayken and Okemow a few hours later near Kitscoty. Pahtayken was charged with seven firearms-related offences, flight from a peace officer, dangerous driving, theft of a truck, mischief over $5,000, damage to property, and failing to comply with an undertaking. He also has charges from February including assault, obstruction and breach of an undertaking.

Shari Priscilla Heathen is charged with second-degree murder for Sparvier’s death. At her court appearance on April 19, her defence lawyer told the court that he had been in discussions with the Crown about a proposed resolution in her case. She appears next in court on May 25. Bird’s matter will be before the court again on May 19. The charges against Heathen and Bird haven’t been proven in court. Sparvier’s body was found on Jan. 1, 2020, east of St. Walburg in the R.M. of Frenchman Butte. Police say the investigation into Sparvier’s death is ongoing and they encourage anyone with information to call Turtleford RCMP at 306-845-4520.
