(WDAM) - If you’ve been to Laurel lately, you can’t help but feel the vibe and notice that the city is becoming quite the tourist destination thanks in part to the HGTV hit show, “Home Town.” The show features Ben and Erin Napier, residents who are passionate about where they live and restoring classic old homes inside the city. As a steady stream of visitors from across the country travel to Laurel to experience life in The City Beautiful, some of those tourists have also decided to plant roots here by purchasing homes of their own.

(WDAM) - The city of Laurel has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission. This grant is a portion of the $1.3 million in grants the commission awards each fiscal year and will be used to hire local artists to display their talent on city-wide traffic control boxes. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. The city of Laurel operates 29 traffic control boxes around the city and although unsightly, they are required items for public safety.

Hardy Graham

Hardy Poindexter Graham Sr. met his Lord and Savior on March 24, 2021. Hardy lived a full life in Meridian, Miss., and made meaningful connections around the world due to his military service, business interests and love of travel. Hardy was born in Meridian, Miss., on May 17, 1942, to Hardy Moore Graham and Cora Lee Poindexter Graham. His family moved to Union City during his childhood in order for his parents to operate Union City Coca-Cola Bottling, and he graduated from Union City High School in 1960. He continued his education at his beloved alma mater, the University of Mississippi. Hardy obtained his bachelor of arts in 1964, and his master of arts in 1965, while working as a graduate assistant teaching history.

Studio visit: Alexis McGrigg Examining themes of identity, space and black existence, the contemporary artist works in a variety of media including layered paintings using dye and charcoal to explore ideas of Blackness as a multidimensional entity When Alexis McGrigg (b. 1989) was a young girl, she would sit on the front porch of her home in Omaha, Nebraska, and think that ‘somehow there was an alternate space I was supposed to exist in’. After graduating with a BFA in painting from Mississippi State University in 2012, she studied for an MFA at Texas Tech University. And when that childhood memory resurfaced, she began to relate the notion of an alternate space to the ideas she had started to develop on the subject of black existence and how it manifests in physical and non-physical forms.
