SAUGATUCK The city of Saugatuck is looking to launch a social district a designated area for outdoor drinking in downtown Saugatuck to boost local bar and restaurant business during the off-season.
Cities elsewhere in West Michigan, including Muskegon, Grand Rapids and Rockford, have begun testing the waters since social districts were created by the state legislature in a package of bills that also legalized to-go cocktails.
The city of Allegan established a social district in December, and Lowell s recently approved social district debuted Friday, Feb. 19.
If approved with a vote of the Saugatuck City Council on Monday, Saugatuck will designate its downtown shopping district as a social drinking zone. Bars and restaurants that opt in and get approval from the state government will be able to sell to-go alcohol which can be consumed outside in designated common areas within the social district.
