CANTON A 21-year-old was convicted by jury on drug charges Thursday, July 29 in St. Lawrence County Court.
Jay McKinney Jr. was convicted after trial for third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (Class B felony), fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (Class D felony), and second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia (Class A misdemeanor).
Sentencing is set for Sept. 21, said a press release from the St. Lawrence County District Attorney, Gary Pasqua.
The convictions carry a maximum sentence of 9 years in state prison, the district attorney said.
The charges stemmed from an incident on the night of March 28, 2020 when McKinney was found to possess more than 500 milligrams of cocaine and drug packaging materials consistent with sale of cocaine.

OGDENSBURG Discussions over whether or not to the county should take over some of the city’s law enforcement duties have begun.
St. Lawrence County Sheriff Brooks J. Bigwarfe and City Manager Steven Jellie met Thursday (July 29) to discuss launching a study on consolidating law enforcement duties between the city and county, said an official statement from the sheriff’s office.
The informational meeting was simply to obtain data and objectives towards consolidation from the city so the sheriff could review and discuss matters with other county offices, the statement said.
“As stated in the past, Sheriff Bigwarfe confirms that he will continue to support law enforcement in the County, which includes the City of Ogdensburg Police Department. 64-year-old Donna A. Pearson of Florida was last seen at Spearfish Canyon Lodge on July 6.
Investigators found Pearson’s vehicle in Rapid City and determined that she took public transportation to Spearfish Canyon Lodge on July 6. No foul play is suspected at this time.

Deputies: More than 400 animals found mistreated; multiple people charged

LAURENS, South Carolina (WHNS) The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office said after checking on the conditions of animals at a home in Gray Court July 16, hundreds of animals were seized by animal control.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, animal control went to Hope Road to check on the condition of the horses around 2 p.m. When they got there, deputies saw multiple malnourished horses and several with severely overgrown hooves and teeth in poor condition.
In total, deputies said more than 400 animals were found on the property, including 12 horses, 30 dogs, approximately 356 chickens, 4 hogs, 3 piglets and 8 rabbits. The hogs were underweight, many roosters were tethered to the ground by leashes and almost all of the animals had no access to water.
