Amid concerns regarding new strains of COVID-19 spreading across the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released additional guidance and a new report on Wednesday about best practices for wearing masks. According to the report, experiments conducted by the CDC showed that exposure to potentially infectious aerosols decreased by about 95% when two mannequins both wore tightly fitted masks either through knotting and tucking a medical procedure mask or by layering a cloth mask over a medical procedure mask, also known as “double masking.”

Story updated at 5:23 p.m. Friday Data from four local health organizations showed that nearly 12,000 first doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been administered in Douglas County as of Thursday. Karrey Britt, spokesperson for Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health, sent data compiled from reports by LMH Health, Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health, Haskell Indian Health Center and Heartland Community Health Center. The data shows that these four organizations have administered 11,892 of the 13,840 first doses they have received, or 85.9%. The four organizations have also administered 1,716 of the 9,180 second doses they have received, or 18.7%.
