Coastal News Today | NY - Study: NY shoreline communities to spend $101M to combat environmental damages

A recent survey lead by the The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, detailed ten New York cities, villages and other jurisdictions along the Great Lakes to show coastal damage from climate change. This survey found that coastal damages will cost these communities at least $101 million over the next five years, with shoreline communities having already spent $36 million in the past two years. “While water in the Great Lakes- St. Lawrence River basin are naturally variable with cyclical highs and lows, climate change is exacerbating these fluctuations, with water levels reaching record highs in recent years,” Chair of the Cities Initiative Walter Sendzik said. “High water levels, paired with severe storm events and wave action, are leading to greater erosion and flooding that threaten public and private properties, critical infrastructure, and recreations and tourism amenities in shoreline communities.

Survey Finds $2B in Great Lakes, St Lawrence Coastline Repairs in Coming Years

Nick Blumberg | July 20, 2021 10:14 pm Two billion dollars over the next five years.  That’s the cost of repairing and shoring up coastlines in the region, according to a survey out this month from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative – on top of nearly $900 million municipalities have already spent over the last two years. The group says the damage is driven by climate change, and calls on the American and Canadian governments to fund local efforts.  Thanks to our sponsors: “Communities around the Great Lakes face a growing crisis, and we need both the Federal Governments of the U.S. and Canada to assist with the necessary investments,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said in a statement. “Our coastal infrastructure is vital to the economic and recreational health of our communities, and coordinated action is required.”
