A dozen Shelter Island residents have worked tirelessly with volunteer Project Manager Edward Hindin, Councilmen Mike Bebon and Albert Dickson and consultants Peter Flinker and Larissa Brown to create a new Comprehensive Plan. But they have not worked in a vacuum. They have opened the process to as many people as possible.
Have they heard from you?
More than 1,000 people responded to an early survey that helped spark thoughts about a new Comprehensive Plan, meant to become a guide for what full- and part-time residents and business operators would like their town to be in the future.

An environmental sustainability plan approved by the Worcester City Council on Tuesday sets a goal of using entirely renewable energy for city buildings by 2030 and a similar goal for transportation by 2045.
The plan is aligned with new state legislation and goals, and sets a target for making Worcester a sustainability leader in Massachusetts and the most sustainable mid-sized city in the country, City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. said in a statement after the vote.
Other aspects of the plan include planting of more trees throughout the city, particularly downtown, where they re less common than in less dense residential areas. The city said the plan also builds upon efforts over the past decade to make city operations more energy efficient, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving water quality in lakes and ponds. A plan is also to be created for eventually reaching a zero-waste goal.

How did a former hot-dog seller turned billionaire restaurateur end up running an army of mercenaries on behalf of Putin? Meet Yevgeny Prigozhin, the man behind the shadowy Wagner Group that conducts black ops across the globe – from assassinations to election-rigging and cyberwarfare. Larisa Brown investigates the former penniless convict who ended up becoming one of Russia s most powerful men.
Last summer I was at the Russian ambassador s residence on Billionaires Row in Kensington, resisting the temptation to devour a plate of gold-wrapped Ferrero Rocher chocolates while anxiously awaiting the arrival of Vladimir Putin s top diplomat in London. I had previously met Andrei Kelin s predecessor, Alexander Yakovenko, 66, on a number of occasions in the aftermath of the Skripal poisoning in Salisbury and had become accustomed to his masterclasses in the art of obfuscation.
Simplify.
That’s the word of the moment for members of the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee.
The members spent Monday evening reviewing suggestions from consultants about the upcoming April 22 workshop aimed at eliciting feedback from the public about a vision for the town’s future.
Consultants Peter Flinker of Dodson and Flinker and Larissa Brown of Larissa Brown & Associates outlined extensive information and charts to help leaders of small group discussions to elicit ideas from participants on a single question: Putting costs and other potentially limiting factors aside, what do people want Shelter Island to be in the future?
The aim is to get the public to help create a wish list, as member Meg Larsen summed up the feelings of many committee members.
