Murphy's Prince Akeem of Zamunda is out on a date with his future wife Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley). But he's got a problem: Lisa doesn't know about Akeem's immense wealth and royal lineage, and Akeem, who is trying to pass himself off as a goat herder, ends up stuck with a paper bag filled with thousands of dollars thanks to his meddling friend and personal servant, Semmi (Arsenio Hall).
Enter the two homeless men sitting right outside the restaurant where Akeem and Lisa will have their date. Akeem pauses before they go inside and slips the men his paper bag. A few minutes later, after the happy couple is seated at their table, the homeless men reappear to shout thanks through a nearby window and we in the audience are hit with a realization: It's Randolph (Ralph Bellamy) and Mortimer Duke (Don Ameche), the chief antagonists in the Murphy comedy classic

Coming 2 America is hands down one of Eddie Murphy’s best, and most successful movies. When it premiered in ’88, it quickly became a fan favorite and international hit. Showcasing a different side of Murphy to those used to the jive talking, street wise characters from his big screen hits 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop. Getting his start on Saturday Night Live by hilariously portraying Gumby, The Little Rascals’ Buckwheat and a more urban take on the PBS kid’s show Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood- Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood, Eddie had built his brand on being anything but child friendly.

In the second act of
Coming 2 America, the now–King Akeem’s recently discovered and hastily incorporated son, Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler), chats among the thickets of the royal garden with his hairdresser and love interest, Mirembe (Nomzamo Mbatha). They’re talking about the differences between America and Zamunda, the fictional African country that Lavelle is next in line to lead. Their pace and discussion meanders before landing on the topic of American filmmaking. “What do we have besides superhero shit, remakes, and sequels to old movies nobody asked for?” Lavelle asks.
