The smell of smoke emanating from a 98-year-old Los Altos womanâs home Monday (July 12) attracted the attention of bystanders in her neighborhood, who called 911 and helped her escape.
No one was injured in the fire, which started in the garage of Dorothy Meyerâs home, located on the 100 block of Doud Drive near Almond School, according to the Santa Clara County Fire Department.
Although initial reports credited Meyerâs neighbors with checking on and evacuating her, some later clarified that two construction workers known only to them as Daniel and Roman were first on the scene. Meyerâs neighbor, Janet Harding, and Hardingâs three grandchildren officially thanked the men and brought them fresh, home-laid chicken eggs two days after the fire.

Following an investigation, MVPD detectives obtained a warrant for Laueseâs arrest, and SWAT officers apprehended him Wednesday (June 30) evening at the Valero gas station at the corner of San Antonio Road and California Avenue, the release stated. They said they found a loaded gun in his car and three more guns, including an AR-15 rifle and a loaded âghost gun,â a term that typically describes an untraceable weapon without serial numbers, within his home.
