LOS ANGELES Despite a stay-at-home order across much of California and a plea from health officials to refrain from traveling amid the worst surge of the coronavirus to date, many people are still flying in and out of Los Angeles International Airport.
In an effort to make travel as safe as possible, LAX opened an onsite rapid COVID-19 testing site on Thursday.
Justin Erbacci, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports, said the airport supports the health advisories that are in place. “But we know that there are people who are traveling, and there are people who have essential travel,” he said. “We want to have this place to help those people who are traveling travel more healthy and safe.”

4:05 PM, Dec. 31, 2020An earlier version of this article said coronavirus testing at Tampa International Airport began Thursday. The airport began offering testing in October and on Thursday announced the program would be extended.
What’s the current situation at the airport?
They re actually going pretty well! Being down 55% down on traffic is never a great year but we ve actually had a stronger recovery than the rest of Southern California. More than the rest of the state, other than maybe Fresno and a couple of smaller airports.
Among the top 50 US airports I think we re in the top three to five, so we ve been pretty fortunate to have a relatively strong rebound of our passenger traffic.
The other thing is the cargo growth, that’s been unprecedented for us; 20% to 30% every month since the onset of the pandemic.
