Black History Month feels more urgent this year. Its roots go back to 1926, when the historian Carter G. GREENFIELD Edward Maeder once said that he was born with a needle in his hand. It was only to be expected, since one grandmother was a seamstress and the other was a shoemaker. The needle in his hand has taken him to a career in the arts from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where he was the curator of the collection of costumes and textiles, to Historic Deerfield, where he was director of exhibitions. He was also founding director of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto in 1994.
