COVID-19: More than 4,400 hospitalized in LA County, 1.7% ICU capacity in SoCal

LOS ANGELES - Health officials in Los Angeles County say they are continuing to see record COVID-19 numbers. On Tuesday, Los Angeles County Public Health reports 86 new deaths, which officials say is a single-day record of deaths since the summer COVID-19 surge.
In addition, Los Angeles County Public Health says 4,403 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 and 21% of those patients are in ICU. In terms of new cases overnight, the county reports 11,194 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday.
As of Tuesday, LA county reports 543,769 positive cases of COVID-19 and a death toll of 8,431.

Nationwide, there were 3,019 new deaths reported on Tuesday. It is only the third time daily deaths have exceeded 3,000 fatalities throughout the pandemic and all three have occurred in the last week
There were 198,357 new confirmed cases on Tuesday and nearly 113,000 people nationwide currently hospitalized with the virus - the highest number at any point during the pandemic
California Governor Gavin Newsom warned of the possibility of thousands of deaths in the coming weeks as the state faces its most intense coronavirus surge yet
“We’re experiencing an explosive and very deadly surge,” Ferrer said.
California has seen coronavirus cases and hospitalizations soar in recent weeks. Hospitals are filling up so fast that officials are rolling out mobile field facilities and scrambling to hire doctors and nurses, while the state is distributing 5,000 body bags mostly to the hard-hit Los Angeles and San Diego areas and has 60 refrigerated trailers standing by as makeshift morgues.
Most of the state s residents are under a stay-at-home order because of dwindling intensive care unit capacity where they live. Los Angeles County has 2,500 ICU beds but within a month could easily need far more, said Dr. Christina Ghaly, the county s health services director.
