A new pilot program in Santa Monica aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide a testing ground for new technologies. March 9, 2021, 8am PST | Diana Ionescu |
In an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, the city of Santa Monica, in partnership with the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI), have rolled out their one-mile zero-emissions delivery zone, which will provide priority access to zero-emissions delivery vehicles, including electric vans, e-cargo scooters and remote-controlled small delivery bots, within certain loading zones. Cailin Crowe reports that the city hopes to alleviate its own last-mile delivery challenges while also supporting its local climate and mobility goals.

Petaluma s 16 existing petrol stations will be allowed to continue to operate
Petaluma in California has become the first US city to ban the construction of new petrol stations and pumps as part of its plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.
The City Council unanimously approved a bill to continue an existing two-year moratorium indefinitely.
The city’s 16 existing petrol stations will be allowed to continue to operate, and the bill will make it easier for stations to add electric vehicle charging points and other alternative fuel stations on their premises.
“This is a massive step forward in the fight to protect communities and the climate from fossil fuels,” environmental nonprofit Stand.earth, which supported the campaign for the bill, said on Twitter.
Dive Brief:
The City of Santa Monica, CA and the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) have rolled out their one-mile zero-emissions delivery zone, which will support LACI s Transportation Electrification Partnership goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and air pollution an additional 25% by 2028.
The delivery zone will provide priority access to zero-emissions delivery vehicles, including electric vans, e-cargo scooters and remote-controlled small delivery bots, within certain loading zones.
Curb management company Automotus technology will help monitor and analyze vehicle activity within the zone, collecting anonymized data to evaluate the effect on congestion, emissions, efficient deliveries, safety and more. The technology will also help provide real-time parking availability data for delivery drivers.
Santa Monica Launches Zero-Emissions Delivery Zone
March 3, 2021
Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) and the City of Santa Monica have launched and deployed a first-in-the-nation zero-emissions delivery zone (ZE Delivery Zone) within a one-square-mile voluntary zone by partnering with tech and delivery companies and community organizations.
The concept for the Santa Monica ZE Delivery Zone was generated by LACI’s Transportation Electrification Partnership (TEP). TEP includes local government officials, utilities, state regulators, automakers, industry leaders, labor and startups working together to reduce air pollution in the greater Los Angeles region by accelerating transportation electrification and zero-emissions goods movement in advance of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
