That fact was particularly important to author Danielle Geller, who recently reread the novel after moving to the Pacific Northwest. In her introduction to the book, Silko wrote from Alaska about how much she missed the desert. Living through the gray winters of Victoria, Canada, and after earning her writing MFA in Arizona, Geller could relate.

Share The Los Angeles Times announced the winners of its 41st annual Book Prizes on Friday, April 16, the day before the 26th Los Angeles Times Festival of Books began as virtual event for the second consecutive year. Among the winners were two books published by Penguin Random House imprints in the following categories: Current Interest Science and Technology THE SMALLEST LIGHTS IN THE UNIVERSE: A Memoir by Sara Seager (Crown) In addition, Penguin novelist and poet Leslie Marmon Silko received the 2020 Robert Kirsch Award for lifetime achievement, recognizing a writer whose work focuses on the American West. Silko’s books, including Laguna, Ceremony, Storyteller, and Almanac of the Dead, are heavily influenced by her mixed heritage of Laguna Pueblo, Mexican and Anglo-American. She writes about the alienation of Native Americans and the importance of Native traditions to help cope with modern-day reservation life.

Print Meena Harris knows she had an unusual upbringing. She was raised in a family of all women: her grandmother, her mother and her aunt Kamala (a.k.a. the vice president). “I, every day, saw female ambition on display, and it was truly my worldview,” Harris said. But when she got older and entered the workforce, she quickly realized society saw female ambition differently. “We’re taught to hide our ambition, to diminish it,” Harris said Sunday at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. She was joined by Times culture columnist and critic Mary McNamara for a panel discussion of her children’s book, “Ambitious Girl.” Harris is a lawyer, author and social media influencer; in 2017 she started a company that sells socially conscious clothing, which has often been worn by celebrities.
