The Holocaust Museum of Los Angeles will host a livestream Yom HaShoah commemoration ceremony specifically honoring the Sephardic communities in Southern Europe and North Africa that were victims of Nazi brutality. The virtual ceremony, which takes place Sunday, April 11 will feature a keynote address by Dr. Aomoar Baum, associate professor and vice chair of Undergraduate Studies, UCLA Department of Anthropology, a speech from Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, performances by singer-songwriters Shira Bouskila and Montana Tucker, and appearances from survivors.
While the museum itself remains closed due to pandemic restrictions, its Yom HaShoah event is open to anyone who wishes to join and honor the Sephardic community.
Will Funding, Politics, and Infrastructure Issues Unplug Electric Aviation?
As start-up companies push forward with ambitious plans for futuristic aircraft, we take a down-to-earth look at the obstacles they may face.
March 2021
Aviation’s electric propulsion revolution is well underway, but when will it be coming to an airport or community near you as part of an advanced air mobility (AAM) system?
While there are predictions aplenty, no one knows for sure, due to the daunting technical and political challenges that remain. However, the consensus is that you’ll see smaller electric fixed-wing and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft service using existing helicopter routes, heliports, vertiports, and airports long before you experience anything resembling an airborne Uber, with ubiquitous rooftop landing pads. The promise of overflying congested ground traffic within, or between, cities with all-electric aircraft still faces major hurdles.
Portland, Oregon’s, homicide rate soared a staggering 1,900% in 2021, with 20 killings, compared with one during the first three months of 2020. The city carved $16 million, or 7%, out of its police budget last year.
Austin, Texas, cut $20 million, or 23%, from its department budget and shifted another $80 million by moving certain services to other departments. Police have reported 19 homicides this year, compared with 14 during the same period last year a 35% rise.
Philadelphia reduced police funding by 5%, or $33 million, and saw homicides climb 25% to 120 in early 2021 from 96 during the same period last year.
In Minneapolis, there have been 19 homicides this year, a 46% jump from the 13 in the first quarter of 2020. The city council has shrunk its department’s budget by more than $9 million, or 5%.

A massive COVID-19 vaccination site on the campus of Cal State L.A. that was slated for possible closure next month will stay open with the help of the city of Los Angeles, officials said Thursday.
The Cal State L.A. site was one of the first two sites in the country to be run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Federal and state officials said last week that they planned to leave the campus site April 11 after an eight-week trial run, projecting that they would administer about 300,000 doses.
Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday that the city of Los Angeles will begin running the Cal State L.A. site by April 12. The site will join several others run by city officials, including the mega-vaccination site at Dodger Stadium and clinics at USC, Hansen Dam and Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley.
