LANCASTER (CNS) - A cold weather alert has been issued for the Antelope Valley after the National Weather Service forecast that wind chill temperatures would go below freezing through the weekend.
The weather service forecasted lows under 30 degrees near Lancaster on Wednesday and Thursday nights, and a wind chill as low as 20 degrees early Thursday.
After a predicted 40-degree Friday night, temperatures are expected to drop again to the 30s Saturday and Sunday nights, NWS says.
“Children, the elderly, and people with disabilities or special medical needs are especially vulnerable during cold weather,” Los Angeles County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis said after issuing the alert.

When State Senator Holly Mitchell won a seat on the L.A. County Board of Supervisors last year, the 30th District lost its representative in Sacramento. Gov. Newsom scheduled a special election for March 2 to fill the vacancy for the rest of Mitchell s term.
If no one gets more than 50% of the vote in the primary, there will be a runoff on May 4.
Democrats hold a supermajority in both the state Assembly and Senate, so the election won t change the balance of power in the legislature, but California senate seats are powerful. There are only 40 members of the upper chamber, so each state senator represents close to a million people more than members of congress.
The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel Completely Glosses Over the History of Skid Row 299 Shares
Netflix s
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel revisits the case of Elisa Lam, a 21-year-old Canadian student who was found dead in the Cecil Hotel s water tank on Feb. 19, 2013. The series unpacks the story by detailing the chilling coincidences associated with her disappearance, offering theories as to what may have happened to her, and analyzing a troubling elevator video, but it completely glosses over the real history of Skid Row, or, as Detective Jim McSorely irresponsibly calls it, a free-for-all, where people are allowed to sleep on the streets, buy drugs, sell their bodies.

One year ago, hotelier Rachel Gerstein was preparing for a busy season ahead.
“We had just renovated, had a brand new lobby,” said Gerstein, who owns the 48-room Shelter Hotel in Koreatown. Then the pandemic hit, and cancellations started rolling in. Gerstein read about Project Roomkey, a city-county program to temporarily place older and medically vulnerable people experiencing homelessness in empty hotel rooms to protect them from COVID-19. She contacted LA Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office to enroll.
“It was a win-win,” Gerstein said. “I could offer jobs back to my entire staff. It was fantastic.”
