Free mulch now available at Foothills Landfill Composting Facility

Residents may be interested in getting back in their gardens, and composted mulch from Las Cruces Utilities is again available, free for pickup, at the LCU Foothills Landfill Composting Facility at 555 S. Sonoma Ranch Blvd.  “The free composted mulch is part of the circular economy of yard waste that we have in Las Cruces. We process the yard waste that residents dispose of in clear bags and leave out for the Green Grappler and turn it into something they can reuse in the future,” said Robin Lawrence, LCU deputy director Solid Waste. As part of LCU residential Solid Waste service, the Green Grappler can pick up an amount equal to two level half-ton pickup truck loads or 4 cubic yards, which is equivalent to four 5’x3’x2’ adjacent piles. Larger loads may be scheduled for pick up for an additional charge and can be arranged by calling Customer Central at 575-541-2111.

Las Cruces Utilities Adds Value to Academics for NMSU Graduates

By cassie mcclure for lcu • Mar 4, 2021 Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) Intern Isuru Abeysiriwardana has spent most of his career in academics and hopes to continue doing research in environmental engineering. However, Abeysiriwardana is spending some time getting real-life field exposure thanks to a collaboration between LCU and New Mexico State University (NMSU). Since January 2021, Abeysiriwardana, an NMSU Ph.D. student, has seen and helped with the inner workings of project management, design, and planning, under the guidance of LCU Senior Engineer Waleed Abu-Issa, P.E. “It’s one thing to know how to design something, but to see the actual structure you’re designing, to walk around it and talk to the operators who use it every day, it helps inform how the end plans are integrated for the benefit of all of its uses and users,” Abu-Issa said.

Las Cruces Utilities to Resume Compost Pickup

By cassie mcclure for lcu • Feb 25, 2021 Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) resumes its free residential and commercial distribution of its Class A+ compost, which had been paused due to COVID-19. Residents can receive five buckets per trip, and while they are encouraged to bring their own buckets, empty and filled buckets are available for pickup. However, residents are asked to wear masks and social distance when they arrive at Jacob A. Hands Wastewater Treatment Facility (JHWWTF). LCU s “black gold” compost contains micronutrients like zinc, manganese, copper, and boron – all beneficial for plant growth and sometimes lacking in local soil, even in the fertile Rio Grande Valley.

Las Cruces Utilities Has A Vital Part in City s Fire Safety Rating

By cassie mcclure for lcu • Feb 14, 2021   In December 2020, Las Cruces Fire Department (LCFD) learned that its Insurance Services Office (ISO) Inc. Public Protection Class 1 Rating would remain in effect for the City of Las Cruces (City) for at least another four years. The rating allows for lower property insurance rates for home and business owners within city limits. Part of the rating was to review the City’s water supply readiness prepared by Las Cruces Utilities (LCU).   To re-evaluate for the rating, the ISO began its performance review of the City in December 2019. ISO collects and analyzes the data using their Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS) and then creates a Public Protection Classification (PPC) grade, which is then assigned to the community.
