[EDITORIAL] A Chance To Rewrite History

By Jim Leach Photo: Shutterstock It says a lot about the last couple of years at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum that, when you start to compile a list of all the upheaval there over the past 24 months, the pandemic barely cracks the top five. The tumult at this vitally important Springfield institution has been years in the making. It goes back even further than the abrupt 2019 firing of executive director Alan Lowe after it was learned that he had taken the museum’s rare original copy of the Gettysburg Address and used it as a party favor for a fundraiser put on by a group connected to talk show host Glenn Beck.

Free Admission for Students at Lincoln Museum

Students in Kindergarten through college will get free admission through the end of May. COVID-19 has changed how we all live our lives where even the most basic things we do are now done differently.  Looking back on life before the pandemic struck the United States, it can seem almost impossible that people voluntarily sat shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers at a sporting event or shook hands with someone they were meeting for the first time. While vaccines offer hope the world can go back to that way of life, the things people do differently and have been doing for the last year are now habits for most. Habits are not easy to break and some of the ways the pandemic has temporarily changed life in the last year could really become a new normal going forward.
