Court: direct mayoral elections run counter to Constitution

Court: direct mayoral elections run counter to Constitution Link copied aA Introduced in Lithuania six years ago, direct mayoral elections run counter to the country s Constitution, the Constitutional Court announced on Monday. It is worth noting that, legally, direct mayoral elections when mayors are elected by municipal communities are possible only following constitutional amendments, the court said. The ruling will come into force on May 3, 2023, i.e., just before the term of now-elected mayors expires. It means that municipal mayors elected during the 2019 and later elections will be able to serve until the end of their term. However, direct mayoral elections in 2023 will only be possible following amendments to Article 119 of the Constitution, the court said.

Lithuanian conservatives leader says he backs direct mayoral elections

Lithuanian conservatives’ leader says he backs direct mayoral elections 2021-04-19 BNS/TBT Staff VILNIUS – Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, the chairman of the ruling Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats, said on Monday that he backs direct mayoral elections, but a constitutional amendment will require support from parliamentarians from across the political spectrum.  I support the direct mayoral elections, as do my party and my colleagues, Landsbergis told reporters.  The situation must be dealt with by the Seimas and, first of all, through a clear consensus of the parties. The Seimas has a task group that analyzes electoral system issues. I think it s well suited to deal with this issue, he said.
