The Hawke s Bay Rowing Club is revelling in the successes of some of the younger members in its big turnout for the national championships last week on premier South Island course Lake Ruataniwha. The club won two novice titles – with the successful women s novice coxed four crew of Lauren Downing, Amelia Taylor, Martine Sandberg, Alice Young and coxswain Georgia Tizard being joined by clubmates Katya Drinnan, Hannah Ritchie, Aimee Argent and Molly Lawson to claim the eights as well.

Hastings-born Robert Wellwood achieved a life-long dream at Ellerslie last Saturday when Concert Hall took out the Group 1 $200,000 Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic.
The 26-year-old, in his third year of training in partnership with Roger James at Cambridge, was credited with his first victory at the elite level after several minor placings, , including a second with Concert Hall in the Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham on December 5.
The Savabeel 6-year-old came from a seemingly hopeless position when last on the home turn in last Saturday s 2000m feature, powering down the outside of the track to snatch a long-neck victory over Supera and In A Twinkling.

Napier Girls High School teacher, athletics coach and mentor Sheila Smidt is starting to wonder if she ll ever be able to take a break after the school s latest triumph at the New Zealand Secondary Schools track and field championships.
Her team of Georgia Jones (6th), Olivia Molloy (24th), Emmison Gear (33rd) and Elley Meynell (36th) won the girls 3000 metre road race teams title, based on best-three placings.
