The United Nations Libya mission said on Thursday that nominations for leadership of a new unified transitional government must be made within a week and voting on candidates would take place in early February.
Libya has been divided since 2014 between rival administrations in the capital Tripoli, in the west, and in the country’s east.
Manoeuvring over the new government has raised fears that powerful figures who stand to lose influence could attempt to sabotage the process.

Libyan representatives will soon turn to the nomination and choice of a unified government to prepare for the December 24 presidential and parliamentary elections – a process that is no less fraught with potential for bitter disputes.

CAIRO – International pressure to find a settlement to Libya’s conflict is building up in an effort to avoid another bout of violence, especially after Libyan meetings in Hurghada and an agreement on a mechanism to choose a new temporary government to oversee the run-up to elections late this year.

Following the agreement on a proposal for the selection mechanism of a unified executive authority, reached by the Advisory Committee of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) in Geneva on 16 January, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) conducted a one-day voting process, from Monday 18 January 10:00 AM to Tuesday 19 January 10:00 AM, during which the LPDF members were asked to cast their vote on the proposal.
Seventy-two LPDF members engaged in the voting process, with 51 voting in favor of the proposed mechanism, representing almost 73 percent of the votes cast, and 19 members voting against. Two members abstained and two others did not engage in the process.
