Taipei, May 20 (CNA) Export orders received by Taiwan-based companies increased for the 14th consecutive month in April on the back of strong demand for tech gadgets with the global economy on the path to gradual recovery, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) reported Thursday.
Export orders in April totaled US$54.93 billion, up 42.6 percent from a year earlier, the highest ever for the month, according to data compiled by the ministry.
The growth in export orders in the month can be attributed to increased shipments of tech gadgets driven by the booming work-from-home economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the gradual recovery of the global economy, it said.

Taipei, May 14 (CNA) Human error has been identified as the cause of power cuts across Taiwan on Thursday, Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua (王美花) said Friday, citing an initial report on the massive blackout that affected more than 4 million households.
Wang said a worker at state-run Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) mistakenly pressed an isolator switch during tests for a transmission wire capacity expansion project at a transformer station in Hsinta Power Plant in Kaohsiung on Thursday.

Taipei, May 13 (CNA) Taiwan s state-run power company on Thursday said it would compensate the roughly 4 million households affected by a rolling power blackout earlier in the day.
The households will receive compensation in line with Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) regulations, Wu Chin-chung (吳進忠), an official at the company s Transmission System Division told reporters.
Wu did not elaborate on the regulations, saying only that it would be similar to the compensation provided after a nation-wide blackout on Aug. 15, 2017.
At that time, Taipower deducted NT$34 (US$1.2), which amounts to the cost of one day s worth of electricity, from the electricity bills of each of the nearly 6 million affected households.

Taipei, May 13 (CNA) Taiwan s state-run power company on Thursday initiated rolling blackouts, or short-term power outages around the country, affecting at least 8.46 million customers nationwide after a malfunction caused four generators to trip at Hsinta Power Plant in Kaohsiung.
Taiwan Power Co. said it had initiated outages in different areas as an emergency measure after generators at the plant jumped at 2:37 p.m., prompting a phone alert that was sent to cell phone users across Taiwan.
