China to beat geographical inequalities in cancer treatment

In a country the size of China, stepping foot into a hospital at the county level and in the city can be very different. Medical experts say reducing geographical inequality when it comes to medical standards should be one of the government s priorities in the near future.
According to Gu Jin, dean of Peking University Shougang Hospital, when it comes to cancer treatment, big Chinese cities like Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai don t differ too much from international standards. However, when you look at the 5-year benchmark for the cancer survival rate, we are over 20-percent lower than the United States, he said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced on Thursday that China has secured a complete victory in its fight against poverty.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, said absolute poverty has been eradicated in the world s most populous country, home to over 1.4 billion people.
Xi made the announcement while addressing a grand gathering held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to mark the nation s poverty alleviation accomplishments and honor model poverty fighters.

Across news media outlets and social media platforms, the blitz around Chinaâs poverty alleviation campaign has fixated millions. On 25 February, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced at the National Poverty Alleviation Summary and Commendation Conference that âmy country’s poverty alleviation battle has won an overall victoryâ.
âShaking off poverty is not the finish line, but the starting point of a new life and new endeavour,â said Xi Jinping.
China claims to have lifted the remaining 98.99 million people from poverty and achieved the goal of âzero povertyâ across the country. The campaign is close to Xi Jinpingâs heart because âcompleteâ eradication of poverty was a goal he had set after assuming office in 2012.
When Mao Zedong stood on Tian anmen Rostrum in Beijing to declare the birth of New China in 1949, a Herculean task stood before him and the Communist Party of China (CPC) that he led: feeding and clothing 540 million Chinese people, nearly 90 percent of whom lived in rural areas.
Poverty is not socialism, socialism means eliminating poverty, and we must keep abreast of the times; that is the purpose of our reform, said Deng Xiaoping, the visionary chief architect of China s reform and opening-up which began in 1978 when the country s incidence of rural poverty was 97.5 percent.
Eradicating poverty is a war China must win, with the hardest and most arduous tasks lie in the country s rural areas and poverty-stricken regions.
