First-Year Etown Student Receives Excellence in Library Research Award

Elizabethtown College’s Lily Harris ‘24 was announced as the winner of this year’s Anna Carper Excellence in Library Research Award. This annual award recognizes the excellent scholarship of First-Year Seminar (FYS) students who make valuable use of the High Library’s research collections and other information sources. The endowed award is named after Anna M. Carper ’41, Librarian of the College from 1960 to 1986. Harris won for her paper, “Can Whaling in Japan be Justified by Culture?” which she wrote for Associate Professor of Japanese Dr. Nobuaki Takahashi’s First-Year Seminar course. Her paper divulges on the current debate between pro-whalers and anti-whalers. It discusses both sides of the argument and uncovers the reasoning behind the hostility toward Japan’s whaling practices.

jward@observertoday.com Lilly Harris and her stepmom Emily King are hosting a villagewide cleanup on Saturday with members of the dance teams. Infinity Dance Academy is cleaning up the downtown Fredonia area on Saturday as a thank you to the community that helped them stay afloat throughout the pandemic. The idea came when studio owner Emily King was out for a walk with her 7-year-old stepdaughter, Lilly Harris and noticed garbage litter ring the streets. “We told her that she, me and my husband could go cleanup, but she wanted to include her dance team,” King shared. “Those are her favorite people and her best friends. She asked if that was something we could do and I said, ‘Yeah, why not?’ “

The Ploughman is based off the 2014 novel om Kim Zupan which Harris adapted into a script. The film tells “the story of the strange friendship that develops between a haunted young deputy sheriff and a notorious old murderer that turns both their worlds upside down. The young sheriff finds much in common with his prisoner, and dangerously seeks counsel from him.”

Jackson residents enjoy another fun day in snow

WBBJ TV February 20, 2021 At the Ballpark in Jackson, families came out to enjoy a fun day in the snow. Families brought their snow boards to go sledding down the hills near the ballpark. Almost everyday this week residents have come to the ballpark to go sledding and of course, do other things in the snow like make snow angels and have a snowball fight. One family tells us they decided to come out and enjoy the snow while the sun is out and it’s not too cold. “Because there’s a lot of snow and we can have a lot of fun,”said Jackson resident, Idris Elise.
