WHMI 93 5 Local News : Lansing Man Sentenced For Brighton Area Police Chase

January 9, 2021 By Jon King / jking@whmi.com Sentencing has been handed down to a man who led local authorities on a vehicle pursuit and foot chase. 22-year-old Savion Richardson of Lansing was arrested last August after Livingston County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to stop his 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee as it traveled eastbound on I-96 near Latson Road. Richardson had a felony warrant for carrying a concealed weapon, which stemmed from a previous vehicle pursuit by the Sheriff’s Office in March of 2020. On Thursday, Livingston County Circuit Court Judge Michael Hatty sentenced Richardson on a charge of bond absconding to two years of probation, with 150 days in the Livingston County Jail and credit for 30 days already served. On a charge of 4th degree fleeing a police officer, he was ordered to serve 148 days in jail, with credit for 118 days already served. The sentence was timed to run concurrent to a 93 day sentence for domestic viole

WHMI 93 5 Local News : Chin To Stand Trial For Tainted Steroid Deaths

December 18, 2020 By Mike Kruzman / news@whmi.com A man charged with the deaths of 11 Livingston County residents has been ordered, like his alleged co-conspirator, to stand trial. Glenn Chin, a former supervising pharmacist for the New England Compounding Center, is going to trial for his connection to tainted steroids produced at the pharmacy that led to over 100 deaths nationally, 11 of them in Livingston County. Livingston County Circuit Court Judge Michael Hatty made the ruling Thursday. Assistant Attorney General Gregory Townsend recounted that when a co-worker of Chin’s confronted him about the dangers of their practices, Chin told him “That’s why we have lawyers.” Chin’s attorney, James Buttrey, argued that there wasn’t any evidence that his client has caused the deaths, and that other NECC employees had placed the steroids in vials prior to them being shipped to health providers. Judge Hatty ruled that it wo

December 18, 2020 By Mike Mruzman / news@whmi.com A former deputy of Livingston County courts has been sentenced for stealing money from legal settlements in civil lawsuits. 51-year old Garry Flanary of Howell was given a delayed sentence of probation from Livingston County Circuit Court Judge Michael Hatty this week. Flanary, who was a special deputy with Livingston County courts, pleaded guilty to 12 charges of embezzlement by a public official in October. According to court records, he stole money from legal settlements that was supposed to be distributed to people in civil lawsuits. He would approach those that owed money and produce a badge while identifying himself as an officer of the court. Testimony showed he was occasionally keeping the money and depositing it into his personal bank account instead of delivering it to the parties to which it was owed. He was requested to repay $34,000, and was given until Thursday to accrue and repay what

WHMI 93 5 Local News : Judge Denies Motion To Drop Charges In Tainted Steroid Case

December 10, 2020 By Jon King / jking@whmi.com A motion has been denied to drop the charges against one of the two men charged with the deaths of 11 Livingston County residents. Barry Cadden is facing trial in Livingston County Circuit Court on second degree murder charges filed last year by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office for his role in running the New England Compounding Center. Cadden was the co-owner of the facility, while his co-defendant, Glenn Chin, was the supervising pharmacist. In court today, Cadden’s attorney argued that there was no evidence that directly linked his client to the tainted steroids produced at the pharmacy, which ultimately led to over 100 deaths nationally, 11 of them in Livingston County. He argued that Cadden was never in the pharmacy’s so-called “clean room”, where the drugs were manufactured, and had no way of knowing what went on there. The attorney, Gerald Gleeson, argued that Ju
