Pride Alliance of Livingston planning series of Pride Month activities

The Pride Alliance of Livingston wants to fill the county with hope and inspiration this June. The organization, which is sponsored by the Livingston Diversity Council, is planning a series of outdoor and virtual activities to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month. We had a creative group of people with really lofty goals of providing various activities in various ways, said Anne Rennie, co-chair of the Pride Alliance of Livingston. No matter how anybody wanted to get involved, there is a method to do so. Pride Month will kick off with a Rainbow Reception from noon to 3 p.m. June 6 at the Mill Pond Amphitheatre in Brighton. The event will feature live music, sidewalk chalking and conversations about how to support members of the LGBTQ+ community.

April 21, 2021 A new partnership aims to advance diversity and inclusion in Livingston County. The Livingston Diversity Council has announced a formal partnership with St. Joseph Mercy Livingston. Council President Nicole Matthews-Creech said for the better part of a year, the two have been having conversations about how a mutually beneficial partnership could be formed. She says with the support from St. Joe’s, the Council will be able to elevate its work within the county to make real, sustainable change. The partnership will enable an alliance with shared board members, educational opportunities, and collaborative learning. It will also put the Council one step closer to being able to fund a staffed position to lead and coordinate the Council. Last week, the Livingston Diversity Council, in partnership with the Livingston County chapter of the League of Women Voters and the Howell Carnegie District Library hosted the online program “Learning From Our Past to Create a Better Future.” Diversity Council Board President Nicole Matthews-Creech led the event, challenging the narrative that racism exists everywhere and that’s just the way it is. She said that while it is not exclusive to our community, Livingston County does have a unique and critical connection to it.

(WXYZ) — The Livingston County Sheriff s Office confirms it s investigating allegations of racist bullying and alleged threats at Hartland High School. Tatayana Vanderlaan, 18, wrote a post on social media that s drawn a lot of supportive comments. One of her biggest things she says is that racism is taught, Travis Palmer, Vanderlaan s best friend, told 7 Action News. Palmer says Vanderlaan sought legal advice and is being advised not to speak any further than what she posted to Facebook on Monday. Vanderlaan, who transferred to Hartland as a junior, wrote that she s been called the n-word, other racist names, threatened, and taunted about her appearance.
