Ron DeSantis on Thursday signed into law numerous election rules changes that advocates say will make elections secure and critics charge will give Republicans an edge in next year s midterm elections. The governor, who is up for re-election in 2022, signed the measure live during a Fox News Channel interview from a West Palm Beach hotel. The event was hosted by Club 45 USA, a former President Trump fan club. Here s what it does, the governor said holding up a placard with bullet points on the new law as he spoke. This keeps us ahead of the curve . We think this will make it even better as we go forward. So we re proud of the strides that we have made. We re not resting on our laurels. And me signing this bill here says, Florida your vote counts. Your vote is going to be cast with integrity and transparency.

DeSantis touts bonuses for first responders at Fort Myers stop

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday he will sign a state budget that includes one-time $1,000 bonuses for emergency first-responders. DeSantis said during a news conference in south Fort Myers that the payouts will go to sworn law enforcement officers, fire department personnel and emergency medical workers, such as EMTs. About 175,000 such workers qualify, DeSantis said. The governor made the announcement at the Lee County Sheriff s Office and was flanked by local state lawmakers and Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno. At one point during the 15-minute stop-over, he held an oversized prop $1,000 check for photographers. While some over the last year have been talking about de-funding law enforcement, we re proud to say we re funding law enforcement  and then some, DeSantis told reporters and a small group of Sheriff s Office employees that assembled at the afternoon news conference.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday said Marcus Okeef Wigley, 35, and Taharra Jaquay Brunson, 41, are charged in the death of Thomas Anthony Green. Both men were previously arrested by Auburn police on kidnapping charges in connection with Green’s disappearance and since had made bond on those charges. Green, was reported missing to Auburn police on Sunday, Sept. 6 2020. He was last seen by a friend early Saturday, Sept. 5.

Deputies determined Hernandez attempted to break into the home by climbing through the window. When the window closed, he was pinned.
