24 new COVID-19 cases reported in Leavenworth County

The 24 cases are what Health Department officials refer to as community cases. The Leavenworth County Health Department typically releases an update about local COVID-19 cases each Monday. A total of 6,777 positive cases of the virus have been confirmed in Leavenworth County since the beginning of the pandemic. As of Monday afternoon, Health Department officials were monitoring 25 active cases in the county. Three Leavenworth County residents were in the hospital Monday because of COVID-19. A total of 223 county residents have been hospitalized because of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Fifty-five Leavenworth County residents have died from complications with COVID-19.

Walk-in vaccination clinic planned for Thursday

The Leavenworth Times The Leavenworth County Health Department will host a walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade St. The clinic is open to Leavenworth County residents who are at least 18 years old. People can go to the clinic to receive their first doses of the Moderna vaccine. Leavenworth County Health Department stops using Johnson & Johnson vaccine

The Health Department will continue to administer the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna. The announcement that the Health Department has stopped offering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine until further notice comes after doctors with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a joint statement Tuesday recommending “a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution.” The recommendation was made following reports of six women in the United States developing a “rare and severe type of blood clot” after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, according to the joint statement.

The Leavenworth Times The Leavenworth County Health Department is opening up a COVID-19 vaccine clinic scheduled for Thursday to people who have not yet received their first dose, according to a county spokeswoman. The clinic is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade St. The clinic is open on a walk-in basis to Leavenworth County residents who are 18 and older. The clinic originally was scheduled only for people who needed their second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. People still can go there to get their second dose. But the clinic also is being made available to people who are seeking their first dose of the Moderna vaccine, according to county spokeswoman Stephanie Sloop.
