Stolen handgun turns up at fiery crash scene

The Leavenworth Times Deputies found a stolen handgun at the scene of a fiery single-vehicle crash near Lansing, according to a news release from the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office. The crash was reported at 11:04 p.m. Monday at Kansas 5 Highway and Tontine Road. One person was taken to the hospital. Deputies believe a Dodge Caravan was traveling south on K-5 when it went off the road. The vehicle struck two trees before being deflected back onto the road. The vehicle spun around and caught on fire, according to a news release from Undersheriff Jim Sherley. The driver was not at the scene when deputies arrived.

Masks optional at Leavenworth police station

The wearing of face coverings is now optional when visiting the Leavenworth police station. Visitors who previously stepped past the reception area to other offices of the Leavenworth Police Department were required to wear masks because of COVID-19. But a sign posted at the police station now indicates masks are optional. Police Chief Pat Kitchens said the change was made at the beginning of the month. He said police officers were among the first group of people to receive a COVID-19 vaccine once administration of the shots began in the area. Kitchens said about 70% of the members of the Leavenworth Police Department elected to be vaccinated.

Trial scheduled in PRHS rape case

The Leavenworth Times The case of a former Pleasant Ridge High School student accused of committing a sexual assault on the school grounds is set to go to trial in November, according to court records. The 17-year-old defendant is charged with rape and aggravated kidnapping. The crimes are alleged to have occurred Feb. 28, 2020, at the high school. The defendant is accused of raping a female student after carrying her from a parking lot to another area of the school grounds. The defendant is being prosecuted as an adult. But the Times is withholding his name because he is under 18 years of age.
