Leavenworth man charged in May 4 homicide stock image and last updated 2021-05-17 14:17:07-04 KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Leavenworth man has been charged in the May 4 murder of Floyd Ross Jr. Cordell Marqueise Stewart faces a first-degree murder charge for the shooting death. It was announced Saturday that the Leavenworth Police Department made an arrest in the murder. They had identified a suspect and searched for him through the week until he surrendered at 3 p.m. on Friday. Ross was shot near North 4th Street and Kiowa Street in Leavenworth around 10:30 p.m. on May 4. He died after being taken to the hospital.

Suspect arrested for Leavenworth homicide

The Leavenworth Times The Leavenworth Police Department has announced an arrest in connection to a homicide that occurred earlier this month. A 21-year-old man was arrested Friday for the shooting death of Floyd E. Ross Jr., according to Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens. Ross, 31, was found lying in a street May 4 in the 400 block of Kiowa Street. He had been shot multiple times. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Kitchens said in a news release that detectives with the Police Department were able to identify a suspect in the case this past week and were searching for him.

Leavenworth County Commission honors fallen deputy with proclamation

Leavenworth County commissioners proclaimed Wednesday as Detective Cpl. Abramovitz Day. The proclamation honored Daniel Abramovitz, a member of the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office who was killed last year in a crash. His death is considered to have occurred in the line of duty. Members of the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office were on hand Wednesday when the proclamation was read by County Commission Chairman Mike Smith. Sheriff Andy Dedeke thanked commissioners for recognizing Abramovitz’s sacrifice. “He was a good friend and public servant,” Dedeke said. Abramovitz died Oct. 30 as a result of a crash at 211th Street and McIntyre Road.

Defendant bound over in Leavenworth murder case

The Leavenworth Times The case of a Leavenworth man charged with murder in connection to the shooting of a 12-year-old boy has been bound over for arraignment. A judge ruled Tuesday there is sufficient probable cause for the case against Darvon D. Thomas to proceed. The decision came at the conclusion of a preliminary hearing. “The defendant will be bound over on both counts,” District Judge Gerald Kuckelman said. Thomas, 25, is charged in Leavenworth County District Court with first-degree murder and contributing to a child’s misconduct. The charges stem from an April 14 shooting in Leavenworth, which resulted in the death of Brian Henderson Jr., Kansas City, Missouri.
