Worrying about bad jet lag could actually make your jet lag worse

vasa / Alamy Worrying about jet lag could actually make it worse, so try to relax on your next long-haul flight. Eva Winnebeck at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany, and her colleagues have looked at potential psychological causes of jet leg – the temporary impact of a long flight in which someone feels out of sync with the new time zone. They may struggle to sleep, feel tired and have trouble concentrating. “In biology when we think about a topic, we often think about what we can measure – like a molecule … Continue reading Subscribe now for unlimited access App + Web

At the Edge of Spacetime --Strange Star S2 Orbiting Milky Way s Supermassive Black Hole

On March 2, 2019, astronomers reported discovery of a dozen black holes gathered around Sagittarius A (Sgr A ), the supermassive monster in the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, supporting a decades-old prediction. After conducting a cosmic inventory to calculate and categorize stellar-remnant black holes, the astronomers from the University of California concluded that there are probably tens of millions of the enigmatic, dark objects in the Milky Way – far more than expected.  Star S2 orbiting Sagittarius A Now, observations made with ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) have revealed for the first time that a star, named S2, orbiting Sgr A (artist impression above) –at the very edge of where space-time breaks down. The star moves in an egg-shaped orbit just as predicted by Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Its orbit is not like an ellipse as predicted by Newton’s theory of gravity. This long-sought-after result was made possible by increasingly precise measure

ASEG VIC Technical Meeting Night

Event description ASEG Victoria is pleased to announce the second of our autumn series of in-person branch events with another technical meeting night. About this Event Dr. Fabian Kohlmann (Managing Director, Lithodat Pty Ltd) on Tuesday May 25th from 6pm at The Kelvin Club. Admission to this event is free for members only, so please ensure you have renewed your membership for 2021 before registering. The Future of Cloud-based Spatial Geoscience Data and its Application in Exploration Well managed, standardized data is vital for the resource industry as it currently undergoes an intense digitalization phase. As most available geoscientific datasets are usually bound by regional extends and have their own attributes and requirements, it is often challenging to merge all data into a consistent global framework which can then be used across boundaries without limits. Lithodat’s vision is to provide geoscientists with global geoscientific databases and built-in analy
