Louisiana Workforce Commission paid unemployment benefits to prisoners during the pandemic

Baton Rouge / louisianaradionetwork.com May 3, 2021 11:58 AM A state audit finds the Louisiana Workforce Commission paid out six-point-two million dollars in unemployment benefits to nearly 12-hundred prisoners. Data Analytics Manager for the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office, Chris Magee, says it’s a conservative number since they only looked at unemployment applications for the first half of 2020. “This really shows that there is an issue with this process but doesn’t fully capture the magnitude of the issue.” Magee says L-W-C has told them the problem is with a vendor that multiple states use that tracks incarceration data… “According to LWC and the vendor basically the data match was not working as intended during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

State Legislative Auditor Finds LWC Paid Out Millions In Benefits In Error

May 3, 2021 (Getty Images) An audit of unemployment benefits paid by the Louisiana Workforce Commission shows millions of dollars in improper payments. The Workforce Commission says the Louisiana Legislative Auditor identified over $6 million paid to nearly 1,200 inmates who are not eligible for unemployment benefits. The LWC s policy requires those seeking unemployment benefits to search for work, which is not possible for those who are incarcerated. The Legislative Auditor says the LWC is working diligently to resolve all the issues noted in the report. Copyright © 2021 TTWN Media Networks Inc.
