Letter: COVID-19 shows need for early child care funding in Louisiana

Starting kindergarten behind makes it infinitely harder for a student to catch up. As a participant in Step Forward and Community Foundation of North Louisiana’s Early Childhood Education Summit in 2019, I learned 60% of the children in Caddo and Bossier Parishes enter school not “kindergarten ready.” With 90% of brain development occurring between birth and age 4, early care and education profoundly influences lifelong success. More than ever before, young children and working families are relying on our support, advocacy and leadership. One way to help more children prepare for kindergarten is to ensure that all children have equitable access to high-quality early child care and education.
