Calgary among the top 10 Canadian cities to be a student

Recently, the British-based organization Studee published their “Best city to be a student in Canada 2021” list in which Calgary landed in the tenth spot.  The organization aims to serve as a platform that guides students across Canada and around the world and provides them with information when choosing a post-secondary institution to enroll in. “We help international students find their dream university online… [by] providing advice and guidance to help reach a decision about where to study,” notes their official webpage. “We help busy university admissions teams by consulting with high volumes of students to make sure they meet all the requirements of the university before making an introduction.” 

The expansion of the African Studies program is now a reality

A student-led initiative that aims to expand the African Studies program in the Faculty of Arts was approved by the Quality Money Program committee of the University of Calgary’s Students’ Union (SU).  It will receive close to $400,000 in the course of the next three academic years and “will [be] used to redesign the African Studies program and implement a series of courses for UCalgary students,” according to the SU portal. In a conversation with the Gauntlet Dr. Caesar Apentiik, coordinator for the African Studies program at the University of Calgary and students Prudence Iticka, Sinit Abraha and Ebenezer Belayneh, highlighted the importance of the initiative and the extent to which the funding will have for the UCalgary community in coming years. 

Trailblazing Black Canadian women - The Gauntlet

With the conclusion of Black History Month and Women’s History Month, this is a great opportunity to highlight the achievements, contributions and the work of Black Canadian women throughout history. These individuals continue to be part of the quest of achieving a more equal society, not only among races, but among genders as well.  Their legacy whether it’s historical or current is part of many sectors of society and continues to inspire Black women, women of colour, non-Black women and people in general to work hard, develop their potential and achieve greatness in all its forms. April 22 marks UCalgary s annual Giving Day

On April 22, the University of Calgary will host its annual Giving Day event for the fifth year in a row which is an event for members of the U of C to contribute to the UCalgary community through different ways.  Students, professors, staff and the general public can participate by either donating to the UCalgary fund, write down a note to the class of 2021 or donate to a particular fund which can range from awards, fellowships, special projects and scholarships and bursaries. “Your support will make extraordinary things happen for our students, our researchers and the community at large,” notes their “Find a Fund” website.
