This year is the first in 30 that Bernie Bjorklund and his son, Jay, have ridden RAGBRAI together a reunion of sorts that almost didn’t happen.
Five years ago, the Bjorklund suffered a motorcycle accident that broke his neck in four places, his back in four and his arm in two. Jay Bjorklund witnessed his father s bike at 55 mph hitting a car that pulled out in front of him at 55 mph. The bike slid under the car and Bernie Bjorklund lost consciousness. His son though he had died, and he almost did.
This is Bjorklund’s second RAGBRAI since the accident, and it started Sunday where his life almost ended: Le Mars. Flight for Life carried him to a hospital there after the accident in Remsen, which also was on Sunday s route.
