When the Bundoran Open surfing festival and a north Mayo “beer barrel run” in aid of the Samaritans were sponsored by Wall Street firm J Streicher in 2019, the organisers of both events must have been delighted but somewhat surprised at their luck.
A Mayo GAA podcast also received sponsorship from the 111-year-old firm one of just five remaining specialist designated market makers now trading on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.
The sponsorship boost had come about after a number of young business executives with links to the northwest took up senior executive positions at J Streicher Global, the Dubai-based international investment arm of the venerable New York trading firm.

FIGURES SHOW A backlog of more than 30,000 patients waiting on hospital outpatient gynaecology appointments.
The figures were released through a Parliamentary Question to Sinn Féin TD Sorcha Clarke, who said it is “beyond concerning” and “astonishingly dangerous” that 4,372 people have been waiting over 18 months for an outpatient appointment.
In total up to 28 January, 30,180 people were waiting on outpatient gynaecology appointments.

A woman was airlifted to hospital yesterday evening following an accident on Croaghan Hill near Lifford.
It s understood that the woman sustained leg injuries with the emergency services alerted to the scene shortly after 5pm.
The Rescue 118 helicopter airlifted the casualty to Letterkenny University Hospital.
The woman s injuries have been described as non-life threatening.
