This was the gist of arguments by the State in opposing bail against Amaal Jantjies in the Parow Regional Court on Friday 30 April. The proceedings relate to a failed hand-grenade attack on the house of the Anti-Gang Unit’s Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear on 23 November 2019.
Modack’s name was at the centre of the State’s arguments and prosecutor Blaine Lazarus played several recordings to the court and referred to messages between Modack and Jantjies.
Jantjies, along with co-accused Farez Smith and Janock Adonis (who is Jantjies’s boyfriend), are facing several charges relating to the failed grenade attack. The trio are facing gang-related offences, including being part of a gang, five counts of conspiracy to commit murder, acquiring an explosive and unlicenced trading in firearms. Both Farez and Smith are members of the Junky Funky Kids in Manenberg.

The wife of slain Anti-gang Unit sector commander Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear has revealed police are working strongly behind the scenes, hoping to secure a possible breakthrough soon.
Nicolette Kinnear said she was left shaken by recent grim court details about a hand grenade planned for her family home.

Kinnear, who was married for 27 years to Charl Kinnear, began a Facebook page called “Justice for LT/Col Charl Kinnear” following the assassination of her husband last September in front of their home in Bishop Lavis, giving the public continual updates on court proceedings.
State prosecutor Blaine Lazarus made this statement on Thursday, 8 April during the bail application of Amaal Jantjies, linked to a hand grenade incident at Kinnear’s house in Gearing Street, Bishop Lavis, Cape Town, on 23 November 2019.
Lazarus told the court about a meeting on 14 November 2019 during which the hand grenade plan was allegedly arranged.
“Nafiz Modack arranged the hit on Lieutenant-Colonel Kinnear. Modack, one of your phones sends you the address of Kinnear, asking that you forward it to Janick [Adonis] and that he knows what to do with it,” said Lazarus.
