As the Texas Senate considered its Local and Uncontested Calendar on the morning of Monday, April 19, Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, cast her 65,000th consecutive vote, a record unmatched among legislators not only in Texas but also
nationwide.
Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick recognized Senator Zaffirini’s “unbelievable” achievement in the Senate Chamber on Tuesday, April 20 and presented her with a personalized gavel to memorialize the occasion.
House Republicans Reject Medicaid Expansion
Texas has the highest rate and number of uninsured people in the country, by far. Hundreds of thousands more Texans lost their coverage during the pandemic. Rural health care is in crisis across the state, with the most rural hospital closures in recent years anywhere in the county in large part because they can’t continue footing the bill for uncompensated care of uninsured people. Yet Texas lawmakers again rejected a proposal on Thursday to draw down billions in federal funds to expand insurance coverage to more than 1 million Texans.
After just a few minutes of debate on the House floor on Thursday, Republican members voted down a budget amendment from Representative Garnet Coleman, a Houston Democrat, to accept the federal funds available under the Affordable Care Act and create a version of Medicaid expansion modeled after plans in other conservative states.

It s about to go off up in here.
Last week, as Texas legislators debated HB 1927 (the Texas Constitutional Carry bill), a new phrase was introduced that conjures up all kinds of images as to the types of people who would be flooding into our state, infiltrating our delicate way of life here in the Lone Star State.
Actually, perhaps we should let Texas State Representative Ann Johnson explain how fear would be struck into our hearts should this bill pass.

Well, this may NOT be totally representative of exactly who the illustrious state representative may be referring to, but I m a Dave Chappelle fan, so deal with it.

In every Texas Lege session, the House’s budget hearing features some of the most high-strung debate, with the competing interests of various Texans fought out in full public view. In 2003, when Republicans had seized their first Texas House majority since Reconstruction and faced a $10 billion shortfall that had to be closed with spending cuts or higher taxes, debate on the budget lasted days. Democrats asked what Jesus might do if faced with cuts to programs for the neediest, while Republicans portrayed themselves as protecting hardworking Texans from higher taxes. Eventually, the GOP won out and House members killed most of the proposed 486 amendments to the budget before concluding their work just before midnight on the third day of debate.
