February 3, 2021 – Hornets Sports & Entertainment today announced that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina for the third straight year will serve as the presenting partner of the organization’s Black History Month efforts this season, which will include various virtual events and new initiatives.
The highlight of the month will be a virtual webinar focused on economic mobility and health equity that features a conversation with Hornets President & Vice Chairman Fred Whitfield and Blue Cross NC President & CEO Dr. Tunde Sotunde. The pre-recorded webinar will also include additional video features and will be released on February 25.
Additionally, Hornets players will take part in a virtual conversation with local youths, discussing how they can use their existing platforms and voices to influence change.

The oldest son of Martin Luther King Jr. said Monday he hopes the new year and a new presidential administration will bring the U.S. closer to fulfilling the late civil rights leader s dream of a more just world. Martin Luther King III spoke during a program recorded for McCrorey YMCA of Charlotte s 27th annual King holiday celebration. While we are not where we need to be around achieving freedom, justice and equality for all humankind, we have an opportunity to start anew, King said in a ceremony held virtually this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Organizations around the Charlotte region are not letting the coronavirus get in the way of marking this year s Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday.
Virtual and outdoor events have been planned throughout the weekend to honor the civil rights leader and build on his dream of racial equality. They include film screenings, musical and dramatic performances, a pay what you can soup kitchen, and virtual remarks from Dr. King s oldest son, Martin Luther King III.
This year s events will also take on special significance after last summer s nationwide protests against police brutality and the rise of white nationalism, said Afeni Grace with Charlotte s Harvey B. Gantt Center.
