Major shipping companies like FedEx and UPS are busy this year with much more than holiday deliveries. They re shipping hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 vaccines across the country.
Just one week after those companies prioritized shipping the Pfizer vaccine, they re fast-tracking Moderna s vaccine to medical centers across the United States. On Sunday, workers packaged up doses in Olive Branch, Mississippi, near the Memphis, Tennessee, area to be transported.
Moderna s vaccine doesn t require the ultra-cold storage that Pfizer s vaccine does, so it can be shipped directly to medical centers without the specialized freezers. “While seeing these high numbers may seem alarming to those outside our hospital, as a major referral center, we routinely operate at or near capacity to provide specialized care to people who come to us from across the region,” Savage said in an email.
Sarasota Memorial also can staff up to cover more beds. The hospital is licensed for 839 beds, which would put it at 90% capacity right now if all those beds were staffed, and has additional observation beds that can be used if needed.
Sarasota Memorial recently expanded its intensive care unit from 62 to 82 beds to handle an influx of acutely ill patients, but dropped the ICU down to 72 beds Thursday. The hospital had 68 COVID-19 patients Thursday, down from 84 on Monday. The ICU had 59 patients, including nine with COVID-19.
