The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), Sudbury campus. (FILE) THUNDER BAY – The Northern Ontario School of Medicine is well on its way to becoming a stand-alone institution, which came as somewhat of a surprise to Lakehead University president Moira McPherson.  McPherson called NOSM an integral part of the Lakehead University and its community, in an emailed statement released on Thursday afternoon and said the legislation, which would make NOSM and the Université de Hearst  independent, degree-granting institutions, was concerning, to say the least.  We know the north is stronger when we work together this partnership, forged by the long-standing collaboration and support of so many local partners, has had a significant and positive impact on our region. We are concerned by today’s news, particularly in light of the absence of any consultation with the University, we are in the process of reviewing this decision and determining its impacts, McPherson said.
