India, scraping all the previous central and state taxes at the stroke of midnight on Friday launched one centralised Goods and Service Tax(GST).
Country s biggest ever tax reform was launched by President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a special function held at the historic Parliament House Central Hall at midnight on June 30.

Ahead of the much-awaited GST roll-out, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has asked the Congress not to get indulged in politics over the roll-out of new tax regime. He said that all the decisions relating to GST were taken unanimously by the council.

The 102 Padma Shri awardees include Col Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir, a veteran of the Bangladesh liberation war, artist Gulfam Ahmed from Uttar Pradesh, basketball player P Anitha from Tamil Nadu and litterateur Sujit Chattopadhyay from West Bengal.
Among the other awardees are table tennis player Mouma Das, physician from Punjab Rattan Lal Mittal, academician from Jammu and Kashmir Chaman Lal Sapru (posthumous) and social worker from Assam Birubala Rabha.

Republic Day is celebrated to commemorate the day the Indian Constitution came into power. This year s celebrations mark the 72nd Republic Day, since it was first observed in 1950. Republic Day celebrations are marked by a parade by the Indian Army, Indian Navy Force and Indian Air Force, accompanied by various air shows at Rajpath in New Delhi.
