A Second Chance For Horses and Humans

One of the biggest dilemmas facing the equine industry today is the need for qualified, dedicated, and knowledgeable help. The need for caring for and managing equine athletes, farms, breeding, and training operations has reached a critical level. Throughout the country, there have been programs in the prison systems, some in existence for years, where horses and humans are connected and where the healing for both begins. Second Chances Farm, at the Lowell Correctional Institute, in Ocala, Florida, is the first and currently the only program for women. Many of the horses are donated thoroughbreds, some injured for life, others being rehabilitated for a new life, just like the women who care for them each day.

Ex-officer gets probation for sex misconduct with female prison inmate

He entered a guilty plea and was adjudicated guilty. Johnson was credited for the four days he spent at the Marion County Jail after his arrest. Two other charges against Johnson, introduction of a contraband into a state correctional institution and unlawful compensation reward, were dropped.  Johnson was fired from his job as a corrections officer at Lowell Correctional Institution, the women s prison north of Ocala, in September 2018. According to law enforcement officials, in September 2018, Johnson s vehicle was searched and investigators found a sexually explicit letter. The letter was apparently written by an inmate. A Lowell supervisor told investigators that he had received information that Johnson and a female inmate at the facility were involved in a sexual relationship. The woman later described two times she performed oral sex. Johnson s DNA was found on her shirt.

Incarcerated individuals deserve the right to vote

Incarcerated individuals deserve the right to vote Granting prisoners their constitutional right to vote can incentivize politicians and prisoners alike to create a better society April 10, 2021 On Sunday, March 7, the 56th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, President Biden signed an executive order to improve access to voting rights and called on Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. House Resolution One, or the For the People Act, has already passed in the House and includes many important facets to making our democracy better, including automatic voter registration, expansion of vote by mail and early voting. A failed amendment to the bill would have ended felony disenfranchisement in the event that the bill was passed.

Marion County Sheriff s employees halt wedding, help crash victim

We heard tires screech and an RN, one of the guests, pulled off her high heels and ran to the scene, Taylor Rafferty recalled on Friday. Deputy Samantha Horne, who is Christopher Rafferty s zone partner, was maid of honor. She was among those who ran to the victim and helped stabilize him. I think (the reaction) was instinctive and none of us hesitated. It’s awesome (that) no matter how important the event or how much planning, Taylor and Christopher ran toward those needing help. It s what we do every day, Horne said. A fortuitous change of venue  The sheriff s office posted a narrative and some photos from the unusual wedding day on the agency Facebook page this week, and the Raffertys agreed to sit down for an interview with the Star-Banner.
